Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost is a fantasy graphic novel that was published as a three-issue comic book series from Radical Publishing.  Written by Ian Edginton and illustrated by painters, Patrick Reilly (the first half of the novel) and Stjepan Sejic (the second half), it re-imagines the story “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp” from Arabian Nights.

Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost takes place mostly in the mystical city of Shambhalla and introduces the two main characters, Ala ad-Din, better known as Aladdin, and Qassim.  Aladdin is an orphaned thief, cheat, gambler, and liar, who was born to a prostitute.  Qassim is a powerful but devious sorcerer with a tendency to murder his lackeys.  Qassim discovers that Aladdin carries a mystical ability within his blood that makes the young thief the perfect person to obtain a lost relic, a lamp containing a djinn, for him.  Aladdin’s dealings with Qassim turn to betrayal and also bring about revelations of Aladdin’s past.  Their conflict leads to the Lost Kingdom of Aramaspi, where an old plot to reshape creation is waiting to be reborn.

This re-imagining of Aladdin has resulted in an outstanding fantasy graphic novel.  Writer Ian Edginton takes the readers on a breathless journey to secret places and lost kingdoms, places the reader may want to visit again and again.  Artists Patrick Reilly and Stjepan Sejic visualize this story and create intense character melodramas with a series of breathtaking vistas as the backdrops to the story.  Reilly and Sejic capture both the feeling of high adventure and the swashbuckling spirit of Edginton’s tale.

This collection also includes a gallery of all the covers for the miniseries, several pages of concept paintings (featuring some impressive images), and an interview with Edginton.  After my initial reading, I said that Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost promised a rousing adventure and delivered, and this trade paperback collection reaffirms that sentiment.
