The world is over run with flesh eating Zombies, relentless, remorseless, ravenous zombies.
You are a member of a small town cut off from communication with the outside world.
You are organised and have a routine and some people who are handy with weapons.
But, you don't know when help is coming. If help is coming and what form that help will take.
Always watching. Always waiting. Nerves always on edge. Sending people out to scavange for supplies and not knowing if they'll come back alive...or dead.
Now imagine if help did come. But was from creatures almost as bad as that of the flesh eating zombies themselves.
What would you do, and where do things go from there?
That is the some of the idea behind Last Blood, a web comic created by Bobby and Chris Cosby from Blatant Comics. It dates back to 2007 (It was a free Comic Book Day title) and is going strong to this day.
The narrative is very strong, nicely paced and drops hints and revelations with poise and aplomb. Rewarding the reader with
interesting things to think about as well as dialogue that is frank,
dark, funny and illuminating. The interplay between the characters in
particular is highlight, being unforced and believable.
Presented in portrait, rather than as a landscape strip has a definite advantage for this title in that it allows Owen Gieni's illustrations to be seen in all it's glory. We get a wonderful mix of landscape and portrait panels in a variety of sizes and widths all of which lend themselves to the pacing of the story. The artwork is detailed and conveys action, isolation, desolation and emotion (among other things) fantastically well.
Delivering characters we care about, moral and emotional dilemmas,
action aplenty(sometimes gruesome - so watch out), and laced with a
fair amount of humour, Last Blood is a joy to read.
