Uncanny X-Men 481

This issue, part 7 of 12 in the “Rise and Fall of the Shi-ar Empire” arc, announces itself on the cover: Good day all, I’m a comic with a torture scene inside! Despite appearances, it’s not that bad. In 481, the X-Men get to know their newfound Shi-ar buddy, Korvus, a little better, Rachel offers some fem-support, and Darwin kicks some butt.

 

I’ve come to this storyline relatively late, but I’m glad to see a talented scribe like Ed Brubaker tackling the Shi’ar. The Shi’ar is part of what makes the X-Men the X-Men, and this long-time fan is thrilled to see Nightcrawler in space again. Reminds one of the Claremont/Byrne glory days. The dialogue is catchy, and moves the story along at a healthy pace. Moreover, Brubaker has a good ear for the way X-exchanges should be written: see the exchange between Havok and Polaris for an example.  

 

Billy Tan makes the X-Men look good. His style reminds me of a slightly darker, more angular David Finch, though his style is still unique. Tan also has a keen eye for composition, and makes use of his panels. When an artist doesn’t know how to use the panels well, the reader feels like he’s bought a three dollar picture book. Tan doesn’t make this mistake.  

 

Worth the money? If you’re following the story, yes. If you’re a casual buyer, wait for an issue with a bit more happening.
