The New Avengers #29

How the rogue Avengers have escaped the surveillance of the official Avengers is finally explained in this story and we get closer to finding out why they decided to rescue Echo from the Elektra and the Hand clan. But before the rogue Avengers can get there, they still have to escape the Brother Voodoo, a sorcerer that is not easily fooled by Doctor Strange’s magic tricks.

This issue was good because it pitted the two Avengers teams against one another. But the reliance over Doctor Strange, to get the Avengers out of trouble is wearing thin. At times, where he could just transport the team from place to place, he claims he can’t but as a good deus ex machina, when the heroes need a quick spell to get them out of trouble, he’s available.

Other inconsistencies are about Brother Voodoo. He recently made a big return to the Marvel universe and worked closely with Luke Cage on a mission. He even attended the Black Panther’s wedding. Yet, it seems that most of the rogue Avengers only know him from his reputation. As for what he’s doing in New York City, while he’s still involved in a case in Wakanda in the pages of the Black Panther, is a mystery to me.

So far the story fits Yu’s style, although he’s not my favourite artist. He has a lot difficulty in making fight choreography that move with the story. Besides his week storytelling skills, he makes his characters look less than appealing.
