Squirrel Girl, the nanny hired to babysit Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ baby has to fight through the Red Skull’s attack on New York City so she can reach the Avengers in time and allow them to go save the world. But will Squirrel Girl, a mutant with ridiculous squirrel-based powers be able to reach the Avengers or will she die trying?

This issue is a spotlight one on a character that has been the butt of jokes since her creation. The running gag with Squirrel Girl is that she defeats major villains all on her own while being a lame character. Well she isn’t lame at all, as her sparring session with Wolverine shows. In fact, she’s quite good at being a super hero. It’s too bad that she has to made fun of continuously because her powers are based on a rodent. Bendis here, uses the same old trick he uses in all other crossover stories. He writes spotlight issues for the characters that focus on one aspect of a bigger story while never really digging deep into it. The story is entertaining, but the modus operandi is getting old.

Deodato has joined the New Avengers and that’s a good thing. He is a breakout talent. I was going to cancel this series, but I may keep buying it just because of this artist. This issue he experiments with crosshatching which gives a textured feel to the shadowy part of his illustrations. That’s great stuff.
