Street Fighter II #5

Cammy and T-Hawk are on their way to the latter’s native village only to be ambushed by mysterious Shadaloo women. But T-Hawk dares not fight them as Little Eagle, of his tribe has also been brainwashed to fight for Shadaloo. Can the pair survive the encounter with so many professional fighters, or will someone from the past be the real challenge they should fear?

This is a straightforward issue with much action and many surprises. Although there are many flashbacks and subplots building up this story, it is easy to understand what is going on. However, except for the cliffhanger, not much makes me want to come back next issue. The characters’ personalities and motivations are easy to figure out, but one doesn’t feel enthralled by their challenges. The short Chung Lin and Master Gen story at the end of the book was much more interesting and made me relate to the characters, even if they are hardened killers.

The artwork is always beautiful with nice hazing effects all over. It almost feels like watching an animated movie. However, Alvin Lee’s storytelling is not effective and it’s often difficult to understand the action. He tries to use tricks which would work best in an animated film instead of a comic book. Perhaps relying less on visual tricks would make this story more compelling. It wasn’t the team’s best effort to date.
