This issue we witness the secret origin of Velma Dinkley, the scientist responsible for the creation of the condition that transforms people into monsters. Stuck inside a Wall-Mart looking for a computer, Velma has to face her reality and her responsibility in turning the world into mindless monsters that want to eat her and the rest of the Scooby Do crew. Will Velma find a solution to heal the world before she gets eaten?

This issue deals with Velma’s social exclusion and how that led her to be taken advantage of by her brothers and compelled to transform the world into monsters, just so that she would fit in with them. It’s an interesting motivation for the super genius mad scientist. It also makes Velma the very villain the other version of her from the cartoon chases and debunks. That aspect of Velma, her deductive skills, has been missing. What deductive skills she has demonstrated and continues to reminisce about this issue are research-focused only. She is not street smart.

The parallels with her exclusion growing up and with the Scooby Do gang have not been explored this issue. Of course they are always in the background but there was an opportunity for Velma to explore her loneliness in far greater ways but it has not occurred this issue. The story uses melodrama and completely show us one view of Velma’s world where she casts herself as the villain and not the person will find a solution to cure the world.

Perhaps it is coming in future issues but there has been scant progress in this series with no real story arc except the constant need to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

Dave Eaglesham and Wellington Alves join Howard Porter this issue with the artwork. Eaglesham’s sequence is very short and thus there is little to say about his work which continues to be solid as ever. Alves does manage to show us the inner beauty of Velma in his flashbacks. Thus she cannot be all that bad. At least I hope so.

Rating: 8 /10
