Review: Scooby Apocalypse #10

Scooby Apocalypse takes a drastic turn, as monsters under the control of Velma Dinkley now rule most of the world. Most, as in there are a few small pockets of human resistance, but for how long? One of those pockets includes her former comrades, Shaggy, Scooby and Freddy. As for Daphne? Well, she’s in the clutches of our evil queen, and things look none too good for her.

MEANWHILE… Shaggy, Scooby and Freddy are conflicted between remaining with the resistance or pulling up stakes in search of Daphne. Freddy’s heart convinces him leaving is the right thing to do, but Shaggy and Scooby seem to be the voice(s) of reason. No, really.

There are a couple of references in this story I really enjoyed, one on the very first page. Long-time Hanna-Barbera fans will get it. The other is perhaps more obscure, but if you’re familiar with the Marvel No-Prize – if you’re not you should be – there’s no avoiding it.

Most of the book is drawn by Chris Batista, whose work I like. He provides a great deal of detail without dwelling on minutia, which helps provide a sense of place and time. The inks of Hunter and Deering are not too radically different to create a jarring transition, but it is noticeable to me.

I’ve always enjoyed Keith Giffen’s sense of humor in comics. He doesn’t take it too terribly seriously. I’ll admit I haven’t read much of DeMatteis’ work, but that’s because what I have read usually contains some sort of obvious agenda. That doesn’t seem to be the case her, though.
