Perhaps if I was born a decade earlier, I would be fond of the good ol" 12" action doll made popular in the 1960's by Hasbro with their G.I. Joe brand. However, I was born in the mid-seventies when Star Wars was all there was to live for. Therefore, I prefer the smaller, all plastic action figure. Nevertheless, we all have are vices and if you happen to be well off or financially secure then it would be an amazing time to be a collector of 1/6 scale action dolls.
Hot Toys Batman
Between American companies, Sideshow toys & DC Direct and Japanese companies, Medicom and Hot toys, there are a bevy of spectacular products being released. Most 1/6 scale products are produced specifically for collector's. It's not like the action figure market where the companies still acquire the majority of their profits from children. This difference results in an amazing attention to detail when it comes to character likeness, articulation and costume. However, all these great improvements from yesterday's 1/6 scale action doll comes with a price. Back when the target market was children, the average 1/6 scale action doll would run somewhere around twenty bucks but with these high quality collector driven pieces, they will run you anywhere between seventy to two hundred dollars! Sometimes more!
Medicom Joker
It's amazing to see the work some of the companies mentioned above can pull off. It is also interesting how these companies sometimes acquire the same licenses. For example, with the hugely successful Batman sequel "The Dark Knight”, all four of these toy companies have been able to release their version of both Batman and the crazed Joker. Each collector has their personal favorite version but I seem to notice a lot of praise going to Hot Toys. They make incredibly detailed versions of pop culture characters but certainly at a cost. A Sideshow or DC Direct 1/6 scale action doll might run you seventy to eighty dollars but Japanese imports, Medicom and Hot Toys inch closer to the hundred and fifty dollars range. So, the choice on which product you go for may be decided for you by the size of your bank book. This doesn’t mean the twenty dollar 12” doll is extinct. Hasbro toys are still producing 1/6 scaled products for their Indiana Joes and G.I. Joe lines but it is clearly obvious they are marketed towards children.
Sideshow Indiana Jones
Both Sideshow Toys and Medicom have the license to produce 1/6 scale Star Wars action dolls and to be honest Sideshow Toys (the cheaper of the two) make as good or better action dolls. So, it isn't always price that determines quality.
Hot Toys Alien Dallas
Some of the properties these companies are getting amazes me. Star Wars and superheroes are common place but Hot Toys just released an amazing Dallas & Kane from the first Alien film in their space suits and they look absolutely spectacular! They even feature light up features! Some other licenses include, Indiana Jones, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, famous movie monsters, zombies and even B-movie monsters and characters.
Sideshow GIJoe Snake-Eyes
As an action figure collector, I am rather jealous at times that toy companies take such pride and care in producing highly detailed, accurate likenesses and articulated figures for the 1/6 scaled collector. However, all I have to do is look into my wallet and realize, perhaps it's a good thing that regular action figure collecting hasn't reached the same level of a collector driven market as the 1/6 scaled action doll. It’s not as if I don’t contribute enough of my income to plastic already.
Say Good-Bye to Action Figure Yellowing
Perhaps one of the greatest frustrations of collecting action figures is the yellowing of plastic parts. Here's how to fix that problem.
