The fourth episode, A Crooked Mile, in The Wolf Among Us continues the trend of being too short without enough to keep our attention. Much like before we are presented with a few fleeting moments of interest amidst far too much dialogue and tedium. It was depressing to see this episode being more about setting up the events of the finale to come considering the preceding installments felt like filler this whole time. Except for the small story significance, A Crooked Mile is the least interesting component to this series.

It seems like we spend most of our time discussing what happened at the end of the last episode. Who the enemy is and how they wronged our heroes so much. For far too long the game dwells on this. It doesn’t help that the second episode was also very dialogue heavy and felt more like it was trying to set something up. This third episode is the exact same. Apart from a brief moment of action in the middle, A Crooked Mile is a lot of people talking about how they feel this situation is going. At least we end off with a good direction for the final episode to come.

Major decisions are the big draw to this series but we don’t even get much of that here. Even when given the option to explore multiple areas in haste, we end up going everywhere with what seems like little consequence. I never felt like I made any real meaningful choices in this episode and any hesitancy in my decision making was none existent. A Crooked Mile struggles to hold your attention for the short hour long length it clocks in at. This episode doesn’t feel impactful in the least.

New characters are presented that do give some more interest to the plot. As stated before, this episode is about setting everything up for the final two episodes. We get to meet several people working under the main protagonist which leads to a really interesting fight. An old rival even gets some blows in during this section. It makes you wonder if some of the choices made in relation to this character before could have altered this fight in one way or the other. We can only hope. Regardless we get a very gruesome battle to take place in which is always great to see when dealing with these extremely strong fables. Bigsby is always entertaining when he gets backed into a corner.

It’s depressing that we ended up getting yet another filler episode with A Crooked Mile. After a low key third episode it would have been great to get some payoff this time around instead of an extended set up for the final two. Apart from a short and exciting fight mid-way through we spend most of our time talking about how angry and confused everyone is. This, paired with a lack of any interesting decisions to make leave the episode feeling almost meaningless. A Crooked Mile was a short and disappointing installment and I can only hope the rest of the season will make good on this wait.
