Something has killed the Watcher and the Avengers want to know why. Captain America asks Nick Fury t take over the criminal investigation. Fury sends teams across the world to find out what power was strong enough to kill the Watcher and take his eyes out. Will the Avengers find the murderer?

Original Sin resembles DC Comics’s Identity Crisis. Or perhaps it is Identity Crisis that borrowed from the old detective story genre. I’m curious to see if Marvel Comics can succeed in telling super hero detective stories. It has never been the publisher’s strength. Identity Crisis united many old themes that had shaped DC Comics in on explosive and often controversial story. This story has many cosmic themes. Marvel usually does well with cosmic themes. But as Captain America alluded, there are few detectives in the Marvel universe. Nick Fury as a spymaster is the closest they have.

While I am intrigued, I’m also afraid that writer Jason Aaron has given readers too many clues in his first issue. I cannot recognize the characters in the last page. They seem responsible for the crime but more avid Marvel Comics readers will (or have). Identity Crisis did one thing well. It hid the culprit until the last issue of the comic book.

Deodato is a pro but his inks are too dark for this series. Many of the backgrounds have fine details that don’t look as solid next to the figures he draws. His rendition is excellent. But the line weight of the backgrounds is too thin. It doesn’t support the foreground well. This is a problem as there are many shadows and dark areas. It gives too much visual information and does not create the right ensemble.

Rating: 8 /10
