Nightwing #133

Nightwing 133 begins a new story arc that features an old girlfriend, an old enemy, and a few Power Rangers extras in bike helmets.

 

Marv Wolfman has set up what may be an interesting story. But this set-up lacks life. With the exception of a few impressive fight scenes, #133 stumbles along on the weak legs of hackneyed writing and corny jokes. Sure, it’s hard to write good dialogue for action scenes…but it’s possible. Chris Claremont and Grant Morrison always did, and Wolfman used to back when he created Bullseye (yes, that Bullseye).

 

Penciler Jamal Igle can’t draw emotions. His characters' faces are scrunched up and unnatural, and facial expressions should have counted for a lot in an issue with this much dialogue. That said, he draws action fluidly. The fight scenes are the graceful, coordinated gems one expects from the title. If you need an action fix, this is a good bet. If not? Pass it up.
