The New Avengers Illuminati #2 of 5

The Illuminati gathers the six Infinity gems after She-Hulk brings one of them to Reid Richards for safekeeping. The Illuminati wants to prevent anyone from gathering the Infinity gems ever again and threaten the universe. The hunt for the missing gems is not easy, but the more pressing matter, is what, will the Illuminati do with the gems, once they find them? Will they resist the urge of using them to right wrongs?

Reid Richards is far from perfect and it’s good to see that even he could be tempted by the power of the Infinity Gauntlet. As a stand alone issue, the story was quick and entertaining. The acts of this secret club of so-called tempered men, become bolder and more dangerous each issue. It will be intriguing to see what happens after this mini-series as it was hinted that the gems will return to haunt the Marvel universe.

I was a bit put off by the beginning of the issue, as I thought it had occurred in the past. That would explain why in the next issue, the Illuminati deals with the Beyonder’s presence, which happened before the Infinity Gauntlet event. It was not clear at all how each of the teams succeeded in keeping the Infinity gems they were after. It seems that such “trivial” details are not interesting in such a narrative.

The artwork is good and captures the look of each character. It’s an action-based story with lots of action. Cheung’s work has a silver age flair, somewhat reminiscent of the old Valiant Comics’ look. It’s all that is required to make this series a winner.

Rating: 8/10
