Luke Cage wants to create his own Avengers with his own rules away from Tony Stark’s influence. He buys the Avengers’ mansion for one dollar and sets out to recruit a new team with Power Fist. But magic has gone awry and magic wielders such as Daemon, Doctor Strange and Doctor Voodoo are attacking the Avengers to get the Eye of Agamotto. Are the New Avengers lost?

Ok, first complaint. Ms. Marvel doesn’t say a word in this issue. Or if she does, she’s on mute. Second ,this series seems to be an attempt by Bendis to have all of his ways with the Avengers. So while he promises to bring back the big three Avengers to the forefront in the Avengers’ series, he still gets to play with a rogue cast in this series. So he can have the same interaction and quirks he injected continually in the previous incarnation of this series. While this issue feels a bit light hearted, it’s still a continuation of the old New Avengers series which was not particularly good at the end of its run. This is the type of series I will gladly remove from my regular reading list.

There is potential, however for the characters. I like the return of Victoria Hand. She was great in Dark Avengers. She can be great here again.  Bendis wasted no time and quickly moved the characters into an epic. He did that for the Avengers series proper. It’s a trick that works and keeps the read occupied before they can reflect on what they don’t like about the new team. The new team of course has little interaction with Hawkeye and Mocking Bird being as quiet as Ms. Marvel. I’m hoping things will get better, but I’m not convinced yet.

Immonen is an old pro. Here he went for a simpler look and style but his solid storytelling is still visible to all. I would argue he’s the strongest asset of this series so far, although he’s no longer a super popular comic book artist. But, he’s a solid artist that can take deadlines and deliver good work. That counts for much.

Rating: 7 /10
