Martian Manhunter #3
DC Comics
Writer: A.J. Lieberman
Penciller: Al Barrionuevo
Inker: BIT

Safe at last, the Green Martians discovered last issue by the Martian Manhunter can finally relax, while the latter looks for the informant that first told him about the conspiracy against the Martians. But the conspirators are also looking for the informant they thought they had killed and they are using Martian proof weapons. Can even the Justice League prevent The Martian Manhunter from acting outside the law in order to protect his people?

In light of the revelation that the Martian Manhunter worked undercover within the American administration to get Checkmate closed, it seems odd that he would not have heard about the conspiracy on Martians in another secret government organization. It’s details like that make give DC Comics less consistency. As for this issue, although entertaining, nothing happens. It’s mostly posturing for next issue’s big fight with the Justice league.

Barrionuevo’s lack of experience is starting to show. His rendering of the Justice League characters is hideous. What works on deformed Martians and evil villains, doesn’t work on characters whose face readers are well acquainted with. The colouring by Marta Martinez is amateurish. I see a lot of mistakes that first year Adobe Photoshop users make all the time, like the soft toning of highlights and shadows into the main tone. It looks ugly and reinforces the amateurish look of this comic book.

5/10
