Who's Who - Loretta Ramirez

Loretta Ramirez started to write for ComicBookBin in July 2003. She was a Marvel Comics guru until Marvel did a silly thing and had the Scarlet Witch kill Hawkeye in Avengers Disassembled. Loretta lost much interest in comics following that event and because of that stopped reviewing comic books for ComicBookBin. It’s telling how the often incomprehensible actions of large comic book publishers can affect comic book readers in myriads of ways, such as get them uninterested in the medium to the point where they go from very engaged fans, reviewing comic books on a weekly basis to just dropping out completely.

Loretta is the kind of typical comic book supporter that got lost in the trenches probably never to return to comics. Of course there is no way to predict or even stop fans from dropping out of comics, but at the time Hawkeye had a new series that was quite interesting with enough potential to become a cult classic. But one of those big comic book events came by and cleaned up his clock.  I often wonder if Loretta came back to comics when Hawkeye was revived. Did she fall in love for comics after the appearance of Hawkeye in The Avengers’ movie?

But more than an Hawkeye fan, Loretta was a solid comic book reviewer. I’m ashamed of mentioning it, although it has to be obvious, but Loretta is a woman, the first one we had @ComicBookBin. In a better world, this would not be an event. I would not have to mention something like that at all. It would be commonplace. In comics, to be a fan and a female is rare. To find your voice in a crowd of men and sexism is not easy. I hope we @ComicBookBin have always offered a friendly and supportive place to write about comics for people of all demographics.

Most of Loretta Ramirez’ writing was in the Marvel Comics reviews section although you’ll find much in the DC Comics reviews too.

Who's Who @ComicBookBin is a feature celebrating the 10th anniversary of ComicBookBin where publisher Hervé St-Louis features writers past and present that have contributed to ComicBookBin over the years.
