I like this issue and the use of the gypsies in the plot to explain Ice’ origin, although the change from ice princess to gypsy has not been well received online. Many think that this was a radical change in her history and invalidated recent stories where her family appeared. They have a valid point. Judd Winick is known to mess around with existing continuity and rewrite everything. When he does it, he doesn’t always try to make it work like Geoff johns. He just rewrites everything and doesn’t worry about the ramifications with past stories. I thought that Johns’ new job was to make sure things like that don’t happen anymore. Personally, not recalling the older stories referred to, I don’t really mind the new origin. It’s actually interesting and provides a way for ice to have a power boost. Although I will say that here, she suffers from the evil bitch syndrome where nice but powerful heroines are turned into crazy villainess. Hopefully, that didn’t last too long. I like that this issue focused only on Ice. Winick has been good at detailing each member of the team once per issue.

The mark of a good artist is when you don’t notice his work as it doesn’t interfere with the story and continues to carry the plot forward. That’s what Dagnino delivers here. It’s crisp and well drawn. There’s little I can say that would be negative. He’s not very distinctive or flashy, but for this story, it works and that’s all that matters.

Rating: 7.5 /10
