Helios Under The Gun #1
Dakuwaka
Writer: Jason Rand
Pencils: Gabe Pena
inks: Derek Fridolfs
Covers: Juan Salcedo, Enrique Corts, Mar Hernandez
Something happened to the dead body of Captain Jason O’Connor, shot last issue by a rogue sniper. The rest of the Helios team has no choice but to burst in the United Nations’ building and defeat all the terrorists holding prisoners inside. Elsewhere, Captain Ashley Blair who went AWOL last issue reunites with the man she loves, Colonel Jack Shields which was thought to be dead. Can they uncover the conspiracy to his attempted murder?
Helios continues to insert large amounts of action and characterization in what must be one of the most entertaining super hero comic book in 2006. Several subplots continue at once while tying to the overall story. Although published every two months, there is enough material in this regular sized comic book to please readers. In fact, it will be difficult to wait for the next chapter as so much happens in one issue.
Helios definitely skip on the trend in current comics of padding and extending a story artificially. The only criticism I have is about the constant renaming of this series as if it were a bunch of miniseries, while it’s always the same story continuing. So far Helios is close to ten issues old, yet it always feels like one is picking up a new series.
The artwork continues to complement the script smoothly in a rare but form fitting ensemble that proves that both writer and artists are forming a unified team. The storytelling highlights the story alone instead of serving as a portfolio for Pena.
