After their defeat at the hands of the Green Lantern Corps a few issues back, the Dominators have it in mind to beat the Guardians and their green army at their own game. Toward that end, they have resurrected the Darkstars, and have sent them out into the galaxy to locate potential hosts.

REALLY? Didn’t we see that happen when Sinestro formed his yellow corps? And the Black Lanterns? And the red, orange, blue, indigo and violet lanterns? Is this what the Green Lantern franchise has come down to, an endless series of battles between variations of itself? How tiresome.

Granted, this is the first issue, and maybe the story arc will unfold in a manner that is new and interesting, but the prologue in this issue doesn’t offer much hope for that. I have no objection to the reintroduction of the Darkstars, but I would prefer a fresh approach. It begs the question: Will the Manhunters be far behind?

Ethan Van Sciver returns to the drawing board for this issue. I would expect no less, given the raise in stakes for this particular storyline. But again, experience has taught me not to expect him to hang around for the entire arc. I hate it when that happens: A comic book company puts it’s a-list talent on a story, only for him to step away (for whatever reason) before the end. Imagine going to a concert, and part way through the show, one of the band members is replaced by a sessions musician. Rather disappointing, no?
