Robyn has had a hard knock life. Her mother's sickness, her neglectful father, and her socio-economic status have all combined to drive her towards a life of crime. It's the type of crime that is reminiscent of her mythical namesake though, born of desperation not greed. Robyn is a street smarts kinda girl. She knows how to steal from the unjust rich and give to the deserving poor. Often the deserving poor end up being herself and her mother, but when she crosses the wrong type of unjust rich, the unregulated and all-powerful kind, she ends up on the receiving end of a set of circumstances that reveals not only her origin, but her true calling...in the land of Myst.

Much hyped, and deservedly so, Grimm Fairy Tales Presents Robyn Hood #1 (of 5), is another solid release from a publisher that defines the axiom "don't judge a book by its cover." For years, I've pretty much shied away from Zenescope Entertainment's books because I always (and mistakenly) considered them to be not much more than T and A affairs. Now I can't get enough of their titles. Yes, Robyn Hood has some pretty risque variant covers, and the standard cover is yet another shot of a super-well endowed young blonde female who is scantily clad, but the story inside belies anything (once again) that I expected. Smart, taunt as Robyn's bowstring, and full of powerful characterization and intent, Robyn Hood might just become my favorite Zenescope title yet.

Dan Glasl's (FAME: Lady Gaga) pencils bring Robyn to brilliant life. He effortlessly switches scenes, realms, and costume periods throughout the issue. His sense of panel layout, anatomy, and fight choreography are top notch. Most importantly, he knows how to draw a female in an attractive way that doesn't rely upon massive amounts of naked skin or skin tight outfits.

Grimm Fairy Tales Presents Robyn Hood, if the series' first issue is a representative of what's to come, just might end up being Zenescope Entertainment's next record sales setting book.
