Assistant Editors: Kean Soo and Phil Craven
Editor at Villard: Chris Schleup

I reviewed Flight: Volume Three last year and found the book so beautifully made that I just had to see the other books in the series. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, if you are a fan of comic books, you shouldn’t miss this opportunity.

Flight: Volume One
was originally released in 2004 by Image Comics but the entire Flight backlist will now be released by Villard Books, a Random House imprint. Volume four in the series is scheduled for a July 2007 release.

The Flight books are a compilation series featuring lesser known comic book artists. This is of course, a great opportunity to showcase their work, much like an art gallery of comic strips. The main object of the book is to feature work that relates to ‘flight’ in some form, hence the title of the book. It’s nice to see that Kazu Kibuishi is once again listed as the editor and art director of Flight: Volume One.

I am also a great fan of Image Comics (who own the compilation copyright) although there’s quite a contrast between what Image Comics seem to be producing now and the content found inside Flight: Volume One. You won’t find a single traditional super hero anywhere in the Flight anthology.

The contrast and variety is what I find is the most exciting thing about these books. There’s something here for everyone’s taste; from the abstract 'Dummy Brother' by Jacob Magraw-Mickleson to the melancholic beauty of ‘Paper and String’ by Jen Wang. And although these artist's may have been unknown's when the first compilation was released, you'd never know it.

The official website for Flight is here. Flight: Volume One can also be located via the Random House website here.
