Red Belt is the story of Jiu-Jitsu instructor Mike Terry who, by helping out an agitated lawyer winds up turning his life into a series of bad luck that threatens his business, his marriage and the life of his friends. Can good karma and good actions be enough overcome all his challenges, or must he break his principles and enroll in a mixed-martial arts tournament to set his life straight?

If you have watched Never Back Down, don’t expect the same type of film here. Red Belt is a more personal film without the special effects and college drama.  I like how each character was developed and how standing by one’s morals can sometimes be a problem. By helping the lawyer, Terry thought he was making life easier for another human being, but other people he helps prove that they don’t share his vision. The fact that so many are willing to double-cross him and steal from him is troubling. It’s almost a Shakespearean epic where one action leads to another event and crisis.

The real tragedy here is that this movie has not attracted the attention of many. Many mixed-martial arts enthusiasts just skipped over because this film was not advertised much and was more a human drama than a display of cool martial arts moves. I didn’t like that in the end, the character had to go down the Rocky path to gain his freedom back as it played into every other martial arts movie.

Visually, the film is good with succinct but effective action, although the close shots don’t make the film a visual library of moves like Never Back Down.
