Despite my high praise for recent issues of Fables, #10 left me a wee bit confused. I look forward to answers in forthcoming issues, so I will be patient and not hold it against the Justis, Sturges & Co.

The stand-off in Plano continues, as years within the walls of the high school pass. In a remarkably small gene pool of one time high school students (and staff, presumably), our three miscreants have created a society unto themselves. In last issue, master sorcerer Bobby Speckland journeyed inside, only to be obliterated powers of magic beyond anyone’s control.

But it is from that sacrifice that the groundswell builds; a force of resistance that could free those within. But if Speckland perished moments after his arrival, what of the radio transmission from him at the end of last issue? This and many other questions will hopefully be answered next issue (or the one after that).

It’s a good story, but has deviated heavily from the one I expected two issues ago: that of a secret task force that handles magical crises, sort of a sorcerer’s SWAT team. I could easily see such an idea optioned for television, were it not for too many elements of other magic/supernatural based shows. But that’s okay; I’ve found a new title to add to to my pull list.

Rating: 6/10
