This issue was a delight to behold. A fresh new storyline, consistently solid artwork by a “new” artist (who is no stranger to the Bat-family) and some fun new characters mixed in with Batwoman and Batman. What’s not to like?

A previous storyline contained monstrous mutations and now it turns out the corpse of a previous baddie has the potential to create a series of bioweapons. The body (which is bigger than several city blocks) has been pilfered and Batman will need to stop the evildoer. But he’s not alone in this endeavour, as Batwoman is along for the ride, with knowledge that the villain has a link to her past.

James Tynion IV is joined by Marguerite Bennett in crafting this intriguing tale. It is an ideal jumping-on-point for new readers and requires no real prior commitment. Drawing us in with its simplicity, it puts a lot of gears in motion that we can expect will pay off in the issues to come as the story continues to unfold and expand.

Ben Oliver’s art is very pleasing to the eye. Characters are very well composed, with a “real” feel that makes heroes look like hardworking people in costumes and not the rippling gods we sometimes see in these books. Composition is excellent with creative panel distribution providing economic storytelling with flair. His pencils are pristine, offering a light touch with his inks, allowing the art to breathe. The colorwork is textured and varied, betraying details other artists might have overlooked.

If Detective Comics can keep up this quality for another dozen issues, we’ll be in for a treat when issue #1000 rolls around.

Rating: 8.5 /10
