A mysterious gang of criminals known as the Victim Syndicate have started causing a ruckus in Gotham City, leaving everyone puzzled. Batman and Batwoman are trying to solve the mystery, but inner demons and recent conflict seems to be getting in the way. Meanwhile, Clayface continues to play nice, working on becoming part of the bat family, even as some folks are wary. And Lucius Fox’s son Luke is drawing Bruce Wayne’s attention by being his equivalent; a wealthy playboy who is secretly a hero with an agenda.

James Tynion IV’s current storyline is only just beginning to get unfold, but it already packs in so much. Building off the previous story arc, and setting the stage for what’s to come, this issue expertly weaves together a bunch of characters we’re inclined to care about. This issue could probably do without the trite knockoff of the X-Men danger room, but the story itself represents high-flying entertainment.

It’s my hope that the dynamic pencil and ink duo of Alvaro Martinez and Raul Fernandez continue to work on a Batman series for years to come. Characters are excellently depicted, action is crisp and realistic, and there is an elegant quality in how the panels are laid out. This issue holds the promise of a great story arc.

Rating: 8.5 /10
