A big piece of information missing from last weeks Arrow review was The Well Dressed Man. The man in question played by the dashing John Barrowman revealed one of what I assume are his many aliases. The reveal was a nice touch teasing John Barrowman will hopefully lead to a very fun DC character incoming in a few episodes. Which leads right into an important subplot of this week’s episode. Walter’s abrupt return to the family was a bit of a groan because his wife was seriously lying to him about almost anything she ever stated as fact. Walter holding her as responsible is completely understandable and something that should be explored further. Luckily in this episode the idea of separation was explored further by Walter who discovered some pretty large secrets about Robert Queen. In addition to that the Tempest was brought up which may or not be explored in more depth. Walter finding the secret book by Robert Queen was a very large development also Having Walter be more prevalent in the series has a high chance of raising the quality of the show due to the acting of Colin Salmon grounding the show.

While the Walter subplot was very fun this week the main one staggered. Oliver Queen’s legacy is too similar to the Vendetta of Helena. Making Oliver seem like nothing but a hypocrite this week. Even Diggle was agreeing with Oliver when normally Diggle is the voice of reason on the show. Helena obviously has a reason to be upset and killing members of the mafia is not the best way to deal with your emotions yet neither is it the worst way. So watching Oliver not support Helena was not only heartbreaking but not justified by any sense of purpose whatsoever. While in the episode itself there were some good things happening, the very premise of the makes little sense and seems counter-intuitive to what Oliver has been building towards. At the core itself we follow an anti-hero which is fine and also the premise of many great television shows. Labeling yourself as something you are not is the opposite of the message of of Arrow. An interesting throwaway line was when Diggle was comparing Oliver and Helena described a drug addict. The way their personal lives have been shattered by things like Vendettas or Legacies is an interesting topic that the show sometimes explores. Giving the Huntress a crossbow was also a nice touch.

Another area where the episode faltered was the dinner scene. The melodrama was played up way too far in a show where personal romances had always been thrown to the side. A point that worked better was the fact that Helena was perfectly okay with killing her father. It actually seemed like a fitting death for him until Oliver intervened. Luckily Huntress disappeared and Oliver can have time to establish himself as a grounded character again. If Merlyn truly does turn completely evil now it will be very effective due to the great characterization that has been in play for him the last few episodes. While this episode definitely stumbled I see no reason why this is more than just temporary roadblock for a show learning how to establish itself.

Rating: 6.5 /10
