I've been following JibJab's animated political commentaries since 2004 and have come to relish the studio's cartoon humour, although the last few years, I haven't been as entertained. This year the studio anchored its spoof around the Mayan end of the world theme with two cartoon Mayans playing hosts as 2012 events and celebrities roll by quickly to a typical jingle.
This year, JibJab animators favoured a return to a more classical animated puppet animated style similar to those that made their name years ago like This Land. The only difference is the cartoony body shape of the characters with torsos and hands slightly larger than their lower body parts. Combined with huge heads, it gives the old JibJab look an updated and more dynamic feel, that’s a bit different from the paper cut out look of old.
The actual plot is where the cartoon becomes less interesting. It’s overly formulaic and not much time was spent of the 2012 presidential election. I don’t recall JibJab producing a specific cartoon for the election either which means that the epic pairing of Obama and Romney just didn’t happen. Romney has a George Bush Jr. quality that would make for fun gags, but the JibJab team has missed the opportunity to entertain. The gags appeared to fast to register properly so I’d say this 2012 year end review is not as strong as some of the classic ones like 2004’s that we’ve come to like.
