12 Rounds is the story of Detective Danny Fisher of the New Orleans’ Police Department who is embroiled in a cat and mouse game with international terrorist Miles Jackson. After accidentally witnessing the death of Jackson’s criminal girlfriend, Fisher’s own girlfriend is kidnapped by Jackson one year after and held as ransom. Fisher has to complete a series of twelve tasks thwarting plots against New Orleans’ residents by Jackson. Will Jackson succeed in winning the twelve rounds of engagement against Fisher, or will the detective stop him first?
When it was released, 12 Rounds barely made a blip on the radar. It’s a standard action movie that received little advertising support from the studio and is expected to make its money as a DVD release. And for that alone, the DVD inserts are quite interesting. They focus mostly on the stunt work by Cena and other actors, giving us a vivid portrayal of the team that assembled this film.
Plot wise, 12 Rounds holds itself together and while many will be quick to compare it to the Diehard franchise, this movie has more human scale, being based in New Orleans and really taking advantage of the local scenery in the plot and the visuals. It’s a action flick, a little less savvy than the Transporter’s series but and engaging story nonetheless. This one will be a no brainer movie one wish to see on a cool rainy Tuesday night with one’s significant other on a couch. I can guarantee that women will not be put off by the action and the violence. Instead, they’ll enjoy the promise Fisher made to his girlfriend. She’s a keeper and not worth losing.
