THOR: SON OF ASGARD #10 – 12: WORTHY

Thor grew up with the belief that he would one day wield the mighty uru hammer, Mjolnir. But as the years pass and he becomes increasingly frustrated by his inability to achieve his goal, Thor comes to question what makes a person worthy.

Unfortunately this is the last arc of this series, but it’s a nice story to go out on. I myself think that a mark of a good writer is being able to get a story across without forcing the dialogue. This issue Yoshida really show’s his talent in that regard. The story looks at motivation and love at its core, but its not preachy, or over analytical. It has a minimal approach that is refreshing and it show’s a real good understanding with the artist.

This is really a visually driven story. This means the artist has a lot of pressure on them, as they have to convey so much sentiment to the reader. Tocchini doesn’t shrink from the task though; he truly does shine this arc. There are pages without any dialogue, but the reader doesn’t lose track of what is happening. The slightest movement is expressed so well, that you know exactly what Yoshida wanted to convey. The page layouts are a perfect fit for the story evolution and we get some stunning splashes and panels. All the covers are fantastic, but issue #12 (see above), for me, is the standout.
