Picking up where we left off, DOOM PATROL #4 finds the Doom Patrol battling underwater monsters intent on conquering the world and destroying humanity. This issue also finds John Byrne starting to get a rhythm with this series. Issue four is still a bit dry, but it ends with a bang.
Thus far, the stories seemed listless whenever Byrne placed the team in their headquarters and the heroes become a group of talking heads, which is certainly the case with this issue. Whenever Byrne moves the players back to the action, the story’s energy dramatically lifts. The art is lively, and in this case, Byrne does some of his best drawing in the underwater climax. However, as the story ends, it’s back to the headquarters, and even a page of this is a letdown. B-
