Rated “T” for “Teen”
VOL. 23: iMala Suerte!

Ichigo “Strawberry” Kurosaki has the ability to see ghosts.  After his family is attacked by a malevolent spirit called a “Hollow,” Ichigo is introduced to the world of the Soul Reapers by a young woman named Rukia Kuchiki.  Now, Ichigo is a Reaper helping tormented souls find peace.

In Bleach, Vol. 23, The Arrancars, Hollows that have attained Soul Reaper-like powers, launch an offensive on the Soul Reapers in Karakaru Town, Ichigo’s home town.  Led by Grimmjow Jeagrjaques, they plan to kill anyone with “spiritual pressure.”  Rukia and Ikkaku Madarame have something to say about that.

THE LOWDOWN:  As one of the most explosive fight comics ever, Bleach has apparently attained a place as an international hit.  It is, however, about more than battle scenes.  Tite Kubo is one of the most imaginative creators to ever draw comics – regardless of nationality.  His understanding of how to use visuals in such a potent way to engage the reader in the thrill of his narrative marks him as an exceptional manga-ka.  Plus, his character designs are the bomb.

POSSIBLE AUDIENCE:  Bleach is part of VIZ Media’s “Shonen Jump” line of comics for young male readers, but its status as an all-time great shounen manga (boys’ comics) should put it on all action fans’ reading lists.

A+
