Short stories can be great displays for budding comics creators trying to break in the industry. They are even more useful when delivered as Web comics. Instead of being long running series that viewers have to follow week after week, they offer potential employers and editors a quick glimpse at the talent of the creators while presenting a full story. This is tactic used by writer Jesse Younge and The Daring Adventures of Android Jones.

Android Jones is a space explorer, possibly a bounty hunter working for a corporation. In this adventure, instead of following the plan he was given by his employer, he decides to cruise around the wrong side of a planet and gets involved with angry natives after making a pass at a female there. Throughout his adventure, he is berated by his sidekick Pip the Robot.

While Younge, working with artist Ryan Cody, achieves his goal of presenting a short story and wrapping it up, he probably cut too many corners. It’s hinted that Android Jones could be a womanizer, but we don’t know how since we never see the altercation that got him to be hunted by the natives. Also, by focusing too much on the adventure side of story, Younge doesn’t show us much of his skills for characterization.

Nevertheless, the artwork by Cody is superb and as often happens, a good artist can propel a common script to new heights and make a comic an enjoyable feast, if one is not tasked with asking questions about whether the enjoyment was a placebo effect created by very good artwork. Younge has a few other short stories on his Website, some of which are better developed and showcase his range of skills better. Of course, each of them is by a very good comic book artist.
