A dotty old woman who lives in a slum is rescued by Superman and comes to believe that he is a guardian angel who protects her. She then proceeds to expose herself to various dangers, knowing that Superman will come to her rescue and clean up the slum in the process. The tale has a nice Silver-Age ring to it while keeping things sufficiently gritty enough to look timely. It is amazing to think that in this day and age, that they actually did a super-hero story that does not focus on violence and which actually has an uplifting outcome. More cynical readers may feel bored by the lack of action and may even feel irritated at this crazy old bag who is dragging Superman from one crisis to another. But the creative team makes the character believable and makes her optimism and belief in Superman quite touching. The art is very good, both at conveying the humanity of the characters and the menacing atmosphere in the slum. If anything, it may be too realistic for a story that is suppose to read like a fairy tale. This gets five out of five stars.
