Late last night, Sony confirmed that Spider-Man is very much their property and dashed fans' hopes that the Webslinger would be swinging into The Avengers anytime soon.

Announced via a secret URL hidden in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer, a press release details Sony's plans to develop "several new projects in the Spider-Man franchise." Sony also took the opportunity to announce Venom and The Sinister Six, two films that will come after The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and expand the universe and, with films dedicated to villains, maybe push superhero films into the realm of supervillains.

The press release also announced the Spider-Man "brain trust," the writers and producers who will be guiding Spidey's on-screen escapades. It looks like Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard, in conjunction with Marc Webb, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach, will "expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films."

Kurtzman, Orci, and Pinkner have been tapped to write the third Amazing Spider-Man, which Sony hopes Webb will return to direct. As for Venom and The Sinister Six, the press release announced "Kurtzman, Orci, and Solomon will write the screenplay for Venom, which Kurtzman will direct; also, Goddard will write, with an eye to direct, The Sinister Six, focusing on the villains in the franchise."

It seems like Drew Goddard, who collaborated with The Avengers writer and director Joss Whedon, is becoming a secret weapon for Marvel characters on-screen. The writer and director is already working on the recently announced Daredevil series for Netflix and will now be part of the brain trust for bringing the Sinister Six to the silver screen.

This is all big news for the Spider-Man franchise, but also confirms that any hopes that Marvel will see the film rights to Spider-Man relapse are a long, long ways away.
