Six months have passed since Fred Jones sacrificed his life to prevent the Henry Hudson Mall from being overrun. Since then, the mall has been turned into Jonestown (Yeah, I know, they address that in the story), drawing more survivors under administration of Mystery Inc.

Daphne has yet to fully process her grief, choosing to channel her rage at the creatures outside. Shaggy and Velma have done a little better, having found comfort in one another, and becoming the admin team for Jonestown. But heavy is the head that wears the crown, handling the various crises – real and manufactured – with varying degrees of patience, courage and diplomacy.

I’ll admit, I had considerable doubts when I began reading this series. I wasn’t sure how long the creative team could maintain the premise effectively. But it seems whenever the story seems to grow a little stale, Giffen and DeMatteis take a sharp turn that opens up new possibilities. It’s veered considerably from the cartoon variant it once promised to be, and I’m okay with that. Very okay.

The back-up feature of Secret Squirrel is another matter. It has become tiresome, and I feel its conclusion is long overdue. I realize there’s only so much story to be contained in 00 pages, but that’s a factor to be considered in the planning stage. If it warranted more pages, it probably wouldn’t be a back-up feature, no?
