The regular Scooby gang splits up this issue, as Daphne and Velma (and Scooby) head off to Gotham City, at the behest of the Birds of Prey. With a fluid team roster, Daphne and Velma (and Scooby) become the latest Birds, leaving Shaggy and Fred to suss out the mystery of the living ragdoll (and no, it’s not who you think. It’s better.)

In Gotham, the Birds of Prey are trying to solve the mystery of a bird of prey – a giant roc that has been involved in an armored car robbery and a jewel heist. Clearly, someone is behind the mythological bird monster come to life. Could it Maxie Zeus? Or Penguin? Or Hugo Strange?

It’s a fun mystery for fans of both franchises, permitting Daphne and Velma (and Scooby) to drop the dead weight that is Fred and Shaggy. The Birds are in fine feathered form – though technically, Batgirl’s not a bird. But there is a brief cameo by someone who is. Satisfying thought it was, it would have been better if she didn’t talk like a mid-‘70s CB radio.

One of the benefits of a book like this is it potentially introduces younger fans to the rich history of the DCU. Sure, they know Superman and Batman, and maybe Green Lantern and the Flash. But it features properties they might not otherwise meet, as well as some of the more obscure characters from the DC library.
