The very first comic book I ever bought was the Legion of Super-Heroes #3, back in 1973. I eventually followed it up with Superboy/Legion of Super-Heroes #199, during the Dave Cockrum era, and was a regular reader of the title for the next 10 years. So I’m thrilled to see the classic Legion back in action, partnering with Mystery Inc.

The Legion presented is that of the late 1960s, following the death of Ferro Lad. His ghost appears to be haunting the Legion Clubhouse, and despite the collective powers of the Legion, they have summoned the Scooby gang form the past to suss out the source of the haunting. Even with the advanced tech of the 30th Century, Scooby and his friends are able to see through the spurious spectre and expose the villains responsible.

As a long-time Legion fan, I really enjoyed the story. It had the goofy innocence reminiscent of the team’s days in Adventure Comics, while remaining true to the Legion’s legacy. DC Comics has a habit of playing fast and loose with its history these days, but this story remains true to what originally made the Legion so great, without having to adhere to current DCU continuity.

If you miss the Legion, this will be an enjoyable fix until DC chooses to re-awaken its sleeping giant. Hopefully, whatever positive response this outing generates will lead to the Legion’s return to an ongoing title.
