Last issue teamed Mystery Inc. with the Atom, but dovetailed into this issue’s more traditional pairing. Scooby and the gang team up with Hanna-Barbera’s Atom Ant. Though tiny like the Atom, his manners and physique are different. Atom Ant packs a powerful punch, which serves him well when monsters come to call.

The story isn’t so much a mystery to be solved as it is a suitable paring after last issue. Atom Ant is called upon to stand and deliver the knock-out punches to the monsters, and their creator, Dr. Crankenshaft. A long time Atom Ant nemesis, he’s no goody two-shoes.

Scott Jeralds artwork is serviceable. One might believe the more cartoony artwork is easier, but perhaps not. It requires the illustrator to stay “on model,” keeping the rendering consistent with established designs. To his credit, Jeralds does not assemble his pages out of stock imagery, as appears to happen in other issues of the Scooby-Doo titles. It’s desperate but not serious.

As stories go, it’s an epilogue that has been expanded into a needless sequel. Perhaps it should have just been a back-up featured in last issue. Something I enjoy about the Scooby books are the call backs and sub-references, be they friend or foe. I think Fisch missed an opportunity here.
