Runaways #26

I'd watch myself if I were you, Mr. Castle
Joss Whedon’s stint on Runaways has, in this reviewers opinion, improved quite dramatically since last issue.  After Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona ended their forty-plus issue run, the reins were handed over to two very capable and talented creators.  Unfortunately, even when you put two incredibly talented people together, the outcome isn’t always great.  Last issue was, to put it lightly, not up to par with the rest of the series.  Yet it seems like the new team just needed some time before finding their feet and pumping out a superb issue, except for the last panel.

Joss Whedon, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly fame, has proven himself to be very good when it comes to writing comics with his Astonishing X-Men series.  Hopes were high when he was assigned to Runaways as he was a very vocal fan, yet I was disappointed with the last issue.  Whedon almost redeemed himself with this one.  This issue has everything: ninjas, missiles, guns, flying demon things, and even chocolate!  The characters really came together this issue as well, especially Whedon’s grasp of Molly Hayes, that was somewhat lacking last time.  The issue is jam-packed full of the humour, witty dialogue, and action that makes this series great.  Until the last panel.  As you’ll find out, just as everything is going great, Whedon drops a plot twist on you that had me going, “Come on!”  Very disappointing.

The art continues to be excellent.  Once again, Michael Ryan seems to have a very firm grasp on what these kids should look and act like.  I loved all of it.  His characters are chalked full of animated emotion that doesn’t make the whole thing feel like a saturday morning cartoon.  I hope Ryan stays with the series for a long time.

7/10    This would have been a 9 if it wasn’t for the ending.
