Superman and Superboy are unable to save the inhabitants of Galymayne, who, due to their religious fanaticism believe that they are supposed to die with their home world, but with the help of one lone realist scientist their species will survive.

James Robinson weaves a metaphor laden tale with "The Last Days" that at times feels heavy handed, but neverthess proved timely and interesting philosophically. Superman and his supporting cast are excellent vehicles for such stories. It also provided DC Comics with a excellent way to humanize him while delving deeper into Superman's psyche and clearing up whether Superman is a believer himself or not.
Which of course could change at any time, of course.

Artist Ed Benes, as always, brings Robinson's story to excellently detailed and iconic life. Benes is wonderful at creating detailed and unique sci-fi worlds and excellently choreographed action scenes.

While all the focus is over on Action Comics with it's countdown to #1000, but Superman remains a solid month to month read.
