Writer/artist Sean Murphy (Joe The Barbarian) gives the Lamb of God a Jurassic Park treatment with this black and white series from (somewhat surprisingly) DC Comics/Vertigo.
In the year 2019, geneticists working alongside the Catholic Church will do the unthinkable by cloning Jesus H. Christ via the Shroud of Turin.
Funded by an evil corporation (of course) who wants to televise the birth of the Messiah to the masses, the “J2 Project” uses a handpicked surrogate Mary to deliver the second coming. Naturally, the public greets this with equal amounts of outrage and gratitude. Will the world change their tune if this kid does turn out to be the real deal?
Punk Rock Jesus definitely lives up to its name. It’s edgy, it’s wide-ranging, it’s aggressive, it’s enriching, it’s intense, and it’s unique.
Issue one tackles such a widespread number of topics that it almost makes me question whether or not Sean Murphy is up to the task of addressing even half of them. Then again, that’s why I like it. Unlike most comic books that simply ignite discussions about nothing, Punk Rock Jesus recklessly wants to talk about everything. I just sure as hell hope that DC has the stones to let the second coming play out without cancellation.
