Second issue into Benjamin Percy’s inaugural story arc  on Nightwing, and I can afford to be patient. I had low expectations when he began his run on Green Arrow, but I was pleased when that series was better than good, it was great. Nightwing, like Green Arrow, is a non-powered super-hero, so I’m optimistic.

My only concern is a brief moment where Dick Grayson’s internal monologue speaks of a known technological threat, yet he activated it anyway. And he hasn’t put it together that that threat may be the source of his muddled mind. Couple that with the villain’s intention toward something he’s already accomplished, and I’m a wee bit confused. But like I said, I can afford to be patient.

But in the meantime, the artwork is excellent. Chris Mooneyham’s scratchy pencils are inked by Klaus Janson, no stranger to Bat-family himself. He brings the same masterful rendering he’s brought to Bat-books in the past.

I am confident Nightwing is in capable hands, creatively speaking. It seems to me the book has struggled since the beginning of Rebirth. Tim Seely and Sam Humphries both contributed to getting the book back on its feet, and now it’s Percy’s turn. Maybe I’m wrong, but all three writers seem intent on providing legitimate, sustainable creative growth.
