Lieutenant-colonel Dastardly and Captain Muttley fly into Unliklistan after a nuclear-like device exploded there and seemingly destroyed the entire country. But atomic reactor was powered with a weird element called unstabilium 239. When Dastardly and Muttley are affected by the cartoony fumes from the drone they were supposed to destroy, nothing will be the same for the Airforce pilots. This comic is not a follow up of last year’s Wacky Races but DC Comics really does not want to give up on Dastardly and Muttley it seems.

This is the kind of story that tries to make sense of the wacky stuff from the original material from cartoons but may be too cerebral in the end. Garth Ennis is not serious in this comic and everything he does should be treated as a joke. But he wasn’t able to reach the sense of amusement that an adaptation of this cartoon should have produced. The comic is fine and it has potential if it really goes into wacky territory next.
I didn’t know Mauricet before but one can tell he’s been trained in classic European comic book art. All his work is solid and mildly cartoony and fun to look at. He is a good fit for this comic. He manages the visual expressions of humans well but I hope that he makes his Muttley more expressive in future issues.
