Out of respect for the victims of the horrific tragedy in Aurora, Colorado where a deranged gunman killed 12 and wounded upwards of 70 during a midnight screening of Dark Knight Rises early Friday morning, Warner Brothers has decided to not release the film's weekend gross until Monday. Several other studios have followed suit and are withholding their films' respected grosses as well.

Still, many sources across the web are reporting that Dark Knight Rises will draw an estimated $170 million this weekend at the domestic box office. This would rank it either 2nd or 3rd behind Marvel's The Avengers and Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part II (both of which had inflated 3D prices on their side)for highest grossing opening weekend ever. Typically studios release their grosses (including a full weekend estimate) on Sundays in order to goad each other. It's nice to see that the studios are putting aside their competitiveness (read cash grabbing bragging rights) for a good reason at least this once.

There is plenty of speculation (also around the web) that fears of a copycat incident at a late show for Dark Knight Rises have kept some moviegoers away. Whether this turns out to be true or not, Dark Knight Rises will go down in history for more than just the actions of a lone madman. It will go down in history as either one of the two or one of the three biggest opening weekends for a film in history. It will also go down in history for being one of the greatest directed, acted, and filmed superhero films in history.
