Black Panther #24

Black Panther’s mission with the rebels is to sniff out the traitor, even if that means hurting some old friends. Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., there are talks of the new Frightful Four, headed by Black Panther, Storm, Doctor Doom and The Submariner. This dream team of villains / heroes is just what America needs. Back home in Wakanda, the Black Panther’s absence is seeding a possible revolt, propped up by the American fleet just five miles away.

Hudlin specializes in making political comments on current events in American society using his work. Here, Black Panther’s old ally, Everett K. Ross, continues to be dumbfounded by the inept comments and plotting of the American administration. It’s interesting how Hudlin seems to be setting up Monica Rambeau, the hero known as Captain Marvel to fall in love with Black Panther. It was news to me that the two ever had some attraction to each other. Let's hope it doesn't mean she will be killed off by the Thor clone next issue.

The artwork by Turnbull started the issue off the wrong foot but thanks to cleaner and less exaggerated artwork by Marcus To, the issue was salvaged and readable. The good choice of an artist can make or break a series. As much as I enjoy the Black Panther, a bad artist is enough to get me to cancel the series. Starting with strong artists, like John Romita Jr, Scot Eaton, and Manuel Garcia makes it difficult to accept anything less. Marcus To is a good addition to the ranks of Black Panther Pencillers.
