In Batman’s decades of history, it’s a pity that we’ve seen very little what becomes of the major players in the variant history of Batman Beyond – until now. Wearing an experimental battlesuit, Terry McGuinnis has jetted off to the Himalayas to confront the leader of the League of Assassins. Yes, Ra’s al Ghul is immortal, but…

Bruce Wayne is hot on his heels, hoping to avoid the inevitable confrontation between his heir and his son. Yes, Damian Wayne still lives, but…

What I have watched Dan Jurgens do over the past several issues is slowly build on the Batman Beyond concept, but in a very selective way. Rather than pull out a building block of the original Bat-franchise and insert it wherever he wants, he is selective. He chooses the pieces carefully, and crafts them to fit in the best manner possible. Readers can be assured that of course, the future of the Bat-franchise could play out no other way.

That’s what I like about the future of the DC Universe. It’s not so beholden to the NOW of the DCU, and has the freedom to become its own entity, free from the constraints of current continuity. Batman Beyond is one of the few bright spots in DC’s current roster of titles.
