Terry McGuiness is outgunned. The League of Assassins has the advantage of shear numbers. He’s wearing an experimental battle suit prototype that Bruce should have destroyed years ago, when it nearly killed him. And Terry is about to wear it into battle – against Ra’s Al Ghul.

Say what you will about the Rebirth line, but one thing I enjoy about books like Batman Beyond is they are not terribly beholden to the current DC Comics continuity. It has the good fortune of existing outside the goings-on of the DCU, Allowing writer Dan Jurgens the freedom to be as creative as he pleases without adhering to the publisher’s overall agenda.

And I am enjoying Bernard Chang’s artwork. It reminds me a great deal of Howard Chaykin’s work, but perhaps with a greater depth of field. The layouts seem similar, but not so much so that Chang is imitating Chaykin.

Batman Beyond is rapidly becoming one of my favorite books, and I encourage anyone weary of the event-fueled line-up, the over-hyped and under-delivered “re-imagining” of their favorite hero, to take a look. You have very little to lose.
