Bane’s creators have reunited to breathe some new life into everyone’s favorite back-breaker. In this 12 issue maxi-series, Bane is working on criminal schemes while forced to contend with surprises and betrayal from fellow-villains, including Catwoman. Will the luchador-masked psychopath come out on top, or will old Bane find himself to be a juiced up loser?

Chuck Dixon and Graham Nolan have produced something I hadn’t seen for a while; a new comic from the 1990s! In a return to form, they’ve crafted a book that evokes the look and feel of their early 90s work that gifted us Bane in the first place. The art can be simplistic and awkward but often creative and pleasant. Eschewing some of the photo-realism of later DC Comics, this is a time of simple, utilitarian fun. Nolan should be proud of demonstrating such consistency over the years.

Dixon is a quintessential Batman 90s writer and it’s pleasing to see his return to form. One of his beloved characters, Batman, is not present in this issue, but with every page’s dialogue, I eagerly await his return. Having jumped into this series cold, I cannot judge the quality of the ongoing story arc, but this fourth issue, while not anything to write home about, seems to fit a tried and tested mold.
