Arata Hinohara is a normal high school student, contending with the daily rigors of dodging bullies and absorbing the harsh words of those jealous over his popularity. In a parallel dimension, an Arata of similar appearance finds himself accused of murdering a princess, prompting him to cross through time and space, displacing himself and trapping Hinohara in a world where humans command the powers of Gods.
After the tumultuous events of the first installment, Arata and Kotoha find themselves exiled to the prison island Gatoya, where they are forced to await execution by the devious warden Tsutsuga. While traversing the island the pair happens across two junior thieves who find themselves enamored with Kotoha. From there the series becomes generic shonen fare, with Arata developing a rivalry with the two only to save them later on when he duels the warden for their lives, gaining their friendship in the process.
Judging by the first two volumes, Watase’s transition from romance to action hasn’t proven to be without its rough spots. The plot continues to be formulaic and predictable, while action sequences that should carry a certain amount of gravity are handicapped by overly expository dialogue. Also worth noting is the apparent focus of the series falling solely on Hinohara as the other Arata is relegated to only a one page cameo at the end of the book, though considering his side of the story is mostly played for comedic value, there should be few complaints.
Of course, as has been the case with the author, many of her shortcomings are easily overlooked thanks to her captivating artwork. When eyeing the dynamic fantasy landscapes rendered on each page, one can hardly blame a reader for glossing over Watase’s flaws in favor of her artistry.
All in all, Arata the Legend volume 2 manages to hold up to the standards of what Watase is known for. Readers are taken on an enjoyable jaunt through a fantastical world that combines heroic adventure with modern teen drama. While it may be somewhat predictable, the series continues to be no less satisfying.
