Batgirl battles street gangs, Catwoman seeks out Batman and Black Canary beats people up in this disjointed issue where lots of things happen but there seems to be no story at all.

This comic has been plagued with so many delays that it is hard to remember what happened in the previous issues. In fact it is hard to remember what the characters are doing in the first place. Why is Barbara Gordon running around in an arcade? Why is Catwoman injured? What the hell is Black Canary even doing in this story aside from giving us a lot of violent cheesecake?

Amazingly, a large number of pages are devoted to giant splash page scenes which just show Batman and Robin running and swinging through the city. This pretty much tells us that this book is basically a vehicle for Jim Lee's pretty drawings. And they are real purty even if they are also totally unrealistic. Do all the women in the Jim Lee universe wear such short skirts? Or perhaps they think that because this is a Frank Miller comic, all the women should look like hookers.

For all the great art, it is hard to care about this story. Batman continues to act more and more like a jerk even telling himself in one panel that a different set of rules applies to costumed freaks like him and Catwoman. Commissoner (to be) Gordon for his part, acts so confused and hopeless, it is hard to feel sorry for him.

By the way, this issue comes with a variant cover by Frank Quitely (of ALL-STAR SUPERMAN fame.) Maybe next issue can come with a variant story by Grant Morrison.
